Stripe Pay Opens Free Transfers Between Stripe Profiles

Stripe's new plug-in sends funds to a business by its profile handle. The open question is how it settles and what limits apply.

Stripe Pay is a narrow but notable rail: it lets one business send funds to another by Stripe profile handle, with Stripe saying the transfers are free. It works only between funded Stripe financial accounts and linked profiles, so it moves value inside Stripe's network rather than competing with card or bank rails.

Stripe has added a way to move money between businesses by handle. According to PYMNTS, the company said in an Oct. 27 LinkedIn post that a "stripe pay" plug-in lets users find companies by their Stripe profile handle and send funds for free, in the Dashboard and the CLI. The mechanism matters more than the headline: it is a closed-loop transfer inside Stripe's own network, and its reach depends on how many businesses already hold the required accounts.

What Stripe says the plug-in does

Stripe's own CLI documentation describes the plug-in as a tool for business-to-business transfers. A sender addresses a recipient by profile handle, for example in the form @profile-username, or by a profile network ID, and specifies an amount and currency. A dry-run option lets the sender review a transfer without sending money, and a JSON output mode returns the review details in machine-readable form. Stripe's announcement, as reported by PYMNTS, calls the transfers free.

Who can send and receive

Eligibility is the main constraint. Stripe's documentation says the sender needs a funded financial account and the recipient needs a financial account linked to their Stripe profile. Interactive sessions can create a missing sender profile, while non-interactive use requires an explicit flag plus a handle, display name and email. In practice the rail reaches only counterparties that have already opted into Stripe's financial-account setup, which limits its use as a general supplier-payment method.

Why the rail is closed-loop

Because both parties must hold Stripe financial accounts, funds move between balances Stripe already custodies rather than across an external network. That is a mechanism difference from card acceptance or bank transfers, which involve interchange or intermediary banks. It is also why free pricing is plausible for Stripe: it does not need to pay for an outside rail on each transfer. Stripe has not, in the sources reviewed, described how the service is funded or whether charges could change.

What is not yet known

The sources reviewed leave several terms unstated: transfer limits, supported countries and currencies, settlement timing beyond the word "instant", and any fees outside the transfer itself. PYMNTS also notes that Stripe CEO Patrick Collison posted that account-to-account payments will be more important than person-to-person payments. That is a stated view, not a disclosed product roadmap, and it should not be read as one.

What it means for incumbents and finance teams

The near-term effect is likely to be on Stripe-to-Stripe flows, such as platforms, vendors and marketplaces that already sit on the network. Card processors and bank transfer providers face pressure only if businesses shift meaningful invoice volume onto these balances, which no source reviewed quantifies. Finance teams should check how many key suppliers hold Stripe profiles with financial accounts, and confirm limits and reconciliation features before relying on the rail.

What is Stripe Pay?
It is a Stripe plug-in, available in the Dashboard and CLI, that sends funds to another business using its Stripe profile handle. Stripe described the transfers as free in a Tuesday, Oct. 27 LinkedIn post, as reported by PYMNTS.
What does a business need to use it?
According to Stripe's CLI documentation, the sender needs a funded financial account and the recipient needs a financial account tied to their Stripe profile. Recipients can be addressed by profile handle or profile network ID.
Does this replace ACH, wires or cards for B2B payments?
Not on current evidence. Transfers run only between Stripe profiles with financial accounts. The sources reviewed give no limits, currency coverage or settlement terms that would show a broader substitution for existing rails.
