Institutions keep staking as Ethereum yields slip to 2.63%

Bitwise data, as reported by CoinDesk, shows Ethereum stake growing while gross staking yields fall. Yield is not what is driving the flows.

Institutions are staking more even as returns shrink: Bitwise data cited by CoinDesk shows Ethereum's gross staking yield averaged 2.63% in Q3, down from 2.81% in Q2, while net inflows ran positive for a sixth straight quarter. The flows suggest yield is not the deciding factor.

Institutional money is still moving into proof-of-stake networks while the return on that stake shrinks. Data from Bitwise, as reported by CoinDesk, shows Ethereum's gross staking yield falling quarter on quarter even as net inflows continued for a sixth straight quarter. The pattern matters for anyone pricing staking products: demand appears to rest on custody, access and network security rather than on the headline rate. The figures below come from Bitwise via CoinDesk and have not been independently recomputed.

Yields fall because fee revenue is thin

Ethereum's gross annualized staking yield averaged 2.63% in Q3, down from 2.81% in Q2, according to Bitwise figures reported by CoinDesk. Newly issued ETH contributed 2.53 percentage points, or 96.3% of the total, with priority fees and ordering payments supplying the remainder. Network fees and ordering revenue averaged 198 ETH a day, down 40.2% from the previous quarter, even though transactions rose 35.3% year over year to 199.3 million. More activity has not translated into more revenue for stakers.

Stake keeps growing regardless

Active Ethereum stake stands at 43.8 million ETH, or 35.9% of total supply, with 1.99 million ETH of net inflows in Q3, per Bitwise. CoinDesk reports that treasury company Bitmine is building its ETH staking position. Payward Services' John Zettler told CoinDesk that staking is countercyclical and that he expects Ethereum yields to keep falling as a larger share of ETH is staked. Falling rates look like a consequence of growth, not a deterrent to it.

Solana shows the same pattern at a higher rate

Solana's gross staking yield was about 6% in Q3, down from 6.38% in Q2, with almost 90% coming from issuance, according to the Bitwise data reported by CoinDesk. Active stake was 440.5 million SOL, while the active validator count fell to 659 from 696. A higher base rate than Ethereum does not change the composition problem: nearly all the reward is protocol inflation, so it declines as participation rises.

Liquidity is the institutional constraint

Redemption timing, not yield, is the practical limit on staking in regulated funds. Lido's Kean Gilbert told CoinDesk that a fund must pay out sellers within a day or two, whereas unstaking ETH can take weeks, and that the average European product is only 50% to 60% staked. Coinbase declined to forecast yields for the next two years. Operators should watch whether fund staking ratios rise, and whether yield compression pushes more capital toward liquid staking tokens.

How much did Ethereum staking yields fall in Q3?
Bitwise data reported by CoinDesk shows gross annualized Ethereum staking yield averaged 2.63% in Q3, down from 2.81% in Q2. Newly issued ETH supplied 2.53 percentage points of the total, about 96.3%.
Are institutions still staking despite lower yields?
Yes. Ethereum recorded 1.99 million ETH of net staking inflows in Q3, the sixth consecutive quarter of positive inflows, and 43.8 million ETH, or 35.9% of supply, is actively staked, per Bitwise as reported by CoinDesk.
What limits staking inside fund products?
Redemption timing. Lido's Kean Gilbert told CoinDesk a fund must pay out sellers within a day or two, while unstaking ETH can take weeks. He said the average European product is only 50% to 60% staked.
